Firstly, I just wanted to say what an excellent component the Google Base XML is, i've got a slight problem though in the fact that in the product descriptions in the product RSS feed it displays all the HTML within the product description. I've read that the product won't be displayed on Google Product Search if there is HTML in the descriptions. Is there anyway in which the HTML can be stripped out in the feed?
Thanks in advance for any answers |

Hi there.
There is nothing in Google's product feed specification that prevents html being used.
You were probably reading about the issue of entity encoding.
The important thing is that html tags have to be encoded, so that for example <img> becomes <img> otherwise this would cause problems with the xml validation. This is probably what you were reading about.
The component takes care of this - you should not need to worry about it. If there is a problem with the entity encoding then the Google merchant centre will tell you about it when you try to upload the data feed. If the feed is accepted then you don't have a problem with this.
If it does point up any errors then do contact us.
Google give some information about the feed specification here: http://www.google.com/support/merchants/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=171375 |

Hello:
I don't know if I should post new thread but we have a vm product list that has ton of html & tags and that is - so says google support - causing products not to show up in our merchant center account.
Is there way to strip out the html or is there way to set component parameters to fix this?
thanks for your time,
best,
john |

Can you explain, are you using the GoogleBase XML component?
What exactly is the message from Google?
To repeat, Google don't have any policy against html in product feeds, they just need to be correctly encoded.
We use the GoogleBaseXML component ourselves to submit our products to Google. These include html tags, it helps to keep them in because Google uses these to format the product description, without them the listing will be one long block of text, it won't look good. |

Hello,
Definitely would love to use html tags as well, here is what google says to me:
"Thank you for your email. I assume that ' was used in this text to
indicate a color which is in HTML encoding. Please remove all such
characters from your data feed and resubmit it without changing the file
name."
We have the & tags in every product listing unfortunately, i wonder if there is anything to be done about it?
Again thanks for your time,
best,
John |

' is the entity code for the ' symbol, I think this is a mistake by Google, they clearly don't know what they are talking about.
I am sure it is possible to develop a workaround for this without having to change your site.
It would help me a lot if you could post the url to your product feed, also an url of an example product where you are having problems, it would help me a lot to see exactly what is going on. |
