hi there!
I just purchased your plugin and it is a life saver
Now, for the baffling thing:
I am using joomla 1.6 and cannot see the average rating appearing what may I be doing wrong ?
I Have Show Rating YES, Rating Image Type BLUE STARS (I changed it from yellow stars just in case it was the problem in there) ... and Average Rating Label says the default string: "Average Rating ...
In the PHP inside /tmpl, in the article.php I commented some stuff, but did not delete anything, and actually I cannot see anywhere a mention to "average" whatever:

It's like there is no implementation in there for the "average Rating"
Any help / explanation is welcome ...

Unfortunately since last November 10 2010 Amazon no longer return the Average Rating. There has been a radical shift in the the way they deal with customer reviews, instead of returning the actual reviews they just send an URL that can be embedded in an iframe - and NO average rating.
There is really nothing that can be done about this except to complain to Amazon in the hope that they might change their mind. You can try posting a complaint in their forum:

You certainly won't be the first, there are a lot of people who are unhappy about this.
If you are confused about why Average Rating is still in the parameters, it is because I have been hoping that Amazon might change their policy on this. |

Thanks for the explanation, Susan!
Btw: I try to limit the output of the plugin in my article by doing {amazonWS:itemId=xxxxx;showRevs=no} but Reviews keep showing up. I tried the other flags with "no" and they keep showing up is there something I am missing ? Maybe they config in the plugin itself overrides these settings ? I got them all in "yes" in the plugin interfase....

You are right, the parameters set in the admin section are overriding this.
This is a bug which has got in, the embedding parameters are being ignored. I will make available soon a new version which deals with this. In the meantime you can disable the reviews in the admin parameters. |

OK, I have uploaded a new version, 2.2.5. You can download it using your old download id, the install as normal using the Joomla installer.
It deals with the issue with the parameters in the embedding code not working, also updates it to use the latest version of the Amazon product advertising API. |

Finally I succeeded installing this new version ... but not without my blues:
I use moodle 1.6 .... installing over the old one did not work.
Neither worked uninstalling the old one first (threw error)
So y went to /plugins/content and tried to delete it
The joomla plugin manager have me an error stating something about an uninstall thing missing in the old plugin, and kept showing it even if te plugin was not there physically-that-is ...
Just then, I tried to install the new one and it installed (keeping the old configuration btw).
Thank you for this new release, but maybe you might test the uninstalling procedure on joomla 1.6...

About amazon rating ... you might be wrong ... I have other sites with wordpress and I use a plugin that does exactly the same as yours ... And there they have the overall rating in all their glory

The installation and uninstallation is handled by the Joomla installer, not by the plugin itself, if you are having problems with this it is probably a problem with your site. I don't think it is a Joomla bug, I have not had any problems installing and uninstalling the plugin with Joomla 1.6, I do test this regularly.
With regard to the rating you have indicated, I believe that the example you have indicated is a rating for the particular offer from a particular merchant, which Amazon do still return. They do not return an average rating for the product as a whole, which they did do until last November.
The Amazon plugin is intended as a lightweight solution it does not really distinguish between offers and products, it just handles the general information for a product, it does not go into details or particular offers. |

Actually I am fairly sure that the rating example you mention at

is for the merchant, it is the rating that you see on Amazon when you look at the new and used offers, for each merchant there is an average rating.
It is not the average product rating you see when you view an Amazon product, so the example is somewhat misleading, because it implies that it is the product rating. But Amazon definitely do not return that information. The website owner could be accused of misleading advertising practises on those grounds, so I would not recommend following that example. |

Sorry again, but the ( NOT free, far more costly than yours) plugin for wordpress gives me the AVERAGE product rating ... you can just see it by going to that link, view the stars, and then click into "MORE INFORMATION" and see the same information in amazon, with the text "

Possibly the Wordpress plugin is obtaining the rating by pulling the information from the customer reviews iframe url, it might be possible to do that.
I can assure you that Amazon really don't return the average rating, this is part of the customer reviews content which is now just returned as an iframe url - see

You are welcome to send me the other plugin, I will certainly have a look to see what it is doing. You can send it to the same adress as you received your order confirmation from.
It would be nice to have the average rating back, if it is possible to get it then I will certainly do my best to put it back in. |
