Optionally downloads can be restricted to registered users only, or specific shopper groups, so it can be used for subscription sites.

Please note that the free download plugin is not designed to create a link which will be sent in an order email when an order is confirmed, it is designed to provide a free download link which will be displayed on the product page.

If you require a download plugin which will only create a link when the order is confirmed you will need to buy the paid download plugin.
